Hi, bonjour & xin chào !
I'm Anh Lê, a German-born ceramicist of Vietnamese heritage, working in Paris under the name « pale ceramics ».
Running through all of my work is a deeper inquiry into my own background: how references from Asian culture and design history can be brought back to life within the contemporary European context in which I was raised.
Trained in fashion design at the Universität der Künste Berlin, I bring a maker's instinct for cloth and construction into the studio. I sew prototypes by hand, cast them in slip, and let the porcelain remember what the fabric once was: every fold, every seam, every crease preserved in a « trompe-l'oeil » that only looks soft.
Porcelain is my primary material. I'm drawn to its precision, its translucency, its ability to hold fine detail. But my work moves between the delicate and the raw. Some pieces are fine and filigree, fragile in appearance, minimal in form. Others are dense, tactile, and deliberately rough, shaped by organic forms that feel native to the material itself and to the natural world it comes from. What draws me is the exploration of these two opposing extremes.
